Who’s Watching the Monument? is a series of landscape photographs centered on British monuments, exploring their symbolic significance in contemporary society and the process of their gradual dissolution. The work employs a stacking technique, focusing on a specific time period before sunset to capture the transformation monuments undergo as the light fades and crowds disperse. This symbolizes their shift from a once-prominent focal point to the margins of collective memory.
As society evolves, the historical narratives originally embedded in these monuments are reinterpreted within changing urban environments, gradually integrating into public spaces. They are no longer solely symbols of commemoration for historical events or figures but increasingly serve as backdrops for photographs or spaces for leisure and gathering. Thus, this work reflects the retreat of monuments’ symbolic power, transforming them into "post-monumental objects" that oscillate between being observed and forgotten, between symbol and emptiness.
